Birding at its Best

Take a step back in time when life was slower and the world around you had sounds and smells that created memories.

Step into a country cottage in the Gulf Coast area of Texas, created to provide you with an escape from today's fast world and an opportunity to appreciate nature at its best. See yourself sitting in the big wicker chairs watching the sun go down and the hummingbirds feed.

Imagine yourself walking up to the redwood cottage, looking at the steep tin roof, wishing a rain shower would come and lull you to sleep.

As you approach the door, you notice it is hand-made from old barn wood, and you may wonder what lies beyond this rustic portal. The door opens to a large, warm room with a beamed ceiling and antique doors. Old wood covers three walls and the floors are tile. The cottage feels cozy, with a spacious and inviting atmosphere.

A living room and a kitchen area are in view as you enter the front door. To your left is a large queen-sized sleeper sofa, which you can fold out and slide in, and then snuggle up to watch a great movie. You may want to tip-toe into the kitchen area and check out the famous snack cupboard and see what goodies have been left for you. Better yet, reach on top of the snack cupboard and turn on the CD player for some romantic music to relax to or just sit at the old kitchen table and watch the bird pond: who knows what action you may see.

The kitchen is a modified kitchen with almost every appliance. Your hosts will provide you with farm eggs, bagels, jams, cereal, coffee, milk, juice and fruit. You decide when to eat your breakfast. You have your own little icebox and all of the utensils: your retreat is fully self-contained.

A few feet further into the main room and you will see an old rescued barn door from a ranch in West Texas. Behind this door is the bedroom. The bed is a queen bed with a little history built right into it... the lights were rescued from a 1930's house scheduled to be destroyed. You can lie in bed and watch the birds feeding in their trays or open the windows and listen to the water from the bird pond and invite the sounds of nature that surround you.

Bird watching is an awesome spectacle during any season in this area. Rockport has attracted birders from all over the world because of the large variety of birds which pass through this Flyway. There are beaches not too far way, along with the State Aquarium, museums, state parks and wildlife refugees. The cabin is only 20 miles to the Gulf of Mexico and 33 miles to Corpus Christi. Rockport Beaches and Town, chartered fishing trips, and guided birding trips are just minutes away. Port Arkansas beaches are 20 minutes away, and Houston and San Antonio are only three hours away. As the day comes to an end, slip into the Country Jacuzzi (also known as a Cattle Trough)... lie back and sip your beverages, watching the stars. Total seclusion allows you to truly enjoy this tub of water!
