John and Lucille's Room
(pictured above left)
John and Lucille Young, the second generation to own this
property, lived here for 50 years. John was in the Army 84th
Infantry in WWII and Lucille was the Stella Postmaster until
her retirement. They were married for 61 years. Both were
active members of Midway United Methodist Church in Stella.
This room is decorated in sage green and brown, John's
favorite colors. A picture hangs in this room of the them in
1942 just before he deployed to Germany, where he fought in
the Battle of the Bulge. |
Carolina Room
This room is decorated in coastal colors of blues and
greens and represents the restful coastal living of this area.
The coast of North Carolina was traditionally farming
communities. Today the pristine beaches draw many people here
to vacation. Surrounding towns like New Bern, Jacksonville,
Beaufort, and Morehead have many activities and events during
the year. The coast has mild climate and those enjoying
outdoors sports like boating, fishing, and golfing find it a
possible all year. |
Mamie Young Room
Mary Sarah Young, known as Mamie was John's mother. She
was born in 1890 and grew up in Jones County on the other side
of Hunter's Creek. James and Mamie married April 1st, 1913 in
Maysville, NC. They moved here to the residence of Mr. William
Kuhn to take care of him since Mr. Kuhn's health was failing.
She lived there until her death May 29th, 1944. According to
the birth certificates, it is thought she had up to 10
children. |
William Kuhn Room
William Kuhn, was a German Immigrant who moved to Stella
from Massachusetts to be the book keeper of the White Oak
River Corporation and second postmaster of this area. Mr. Kuhn
and James Young became good friends and worked together to
build up the community. Mr. Kuhn never married and died
February 1914. Upon his death the property was willed to James
and Mamie Young who had come there to live when Mr. Kuhn's
health was declining. |
