Italian Pasta Gravy

This is a family heirloom recipe. It is one that my cousin-in-law's mother received from her mother-in-law. She is an English gal and her mother-in-law took it upon herself to bestow this recipe on her as her first friendly gesture toward her new obviously non-Italian daughter-in-law. Quite dutifully, she took the recipe and has been using it for the past fifty years!

Ingredients

1 pound ground beef

2 Italian sausages, skin removed and meat crumbled

1-1/2 cups finely chopped carrots

Mushrooms, canned or fresh

Four 15-ounce cans tomato sauce

2 Tablespoons granulated garlic or fresh garlic

1/4 cup Italian seasoning

Light sprinkle of black pepper

Salt to taste

1/4 cup water

Pour olive oil into large saucepan and heat slightly. Add both ground meats, stirring as they brown. Next add chopped carrots, also stirring as they cook. When they are soft and a pale orange, add tomato sauce 1/2 can at a time. When mixture turns golden, add next 1/2 can, etc. Add mushrooms (with juice if using canned). Add seasonings. Stir well, then lower heat and let simmer for 2-1/2 hours.
