The Victorian charm of an elaborate
bride's house in the country's first spa transfuses Highlawn
Inn Bed and Breakfast with the gracious warmth of yesterday.
Historic - Highlawn
Inn was built in the late 1890's by Algernon R. Unger for his
bride, Chaffie Ziler. Unger served in the West Virginia
Legislature and built the landmark Washington Hotel in
Berkeley Springs, since destroyed by fire in 1974. After his
death, Unger's widow operated Highlawn as a boarding house.
This home, located three blocks from the center of town on a
quiet side street, features authentic furnishings and ornate
fireplaces. Guests will find the meticulously restored home, a
member of West Virginia Historic Inns, the perfect spot from
which to explore the gracious charm of Berkeley Springs.
Comfortable
Accommodations - Highlawn
boasts twelve guest accommodations in four unique buildings
and two separate cottages, each with a private bath, color TV,
and air conditioning. Some rooms feature fireplaces, some have
double whirlpool baths, and some rooms have both features. All
accommodations are comfortable, tastefully appointed with
antiques, and decorated to reflect the beauty of the times.
You can choose rooms with double-, queen-, or king-sized beds
of brass, iron, or fine carved woods.
Privacy - The
Carriage House, just behind the Inn, has a private entrance
and features an enormous room with exposed wooden beams in
ceiling and a bathroom with French doors enclosing a whirlpool
for two filled with Berkeley Springs' famous mineral water.
The bathroom also has a shower for two. A fireplace in the
middle of the room may be seen from the whirlpool, the
queen-sized bed or sitting area. The sitting area provides a
sofa, table and chairs, and a huge corner cabinet housing a
25-inch color television, VCR with movie library, and CD
player. The floral decor is complemented with antiques, and
for your convenience a small refrigerator and coffee maker are
provided.
Ideal for extended
stays, The Bathkeeper's Quarters cottage provides vacation
rental lodging around the block with two bedrooms, large
whirlpool room, kitchen, parlor with fireplace, and porch.
Memorable
Breakfasts - Breakfast
finds delectable aromas wafting from Sandy's kitchen, where
she is known for her ethereally light scrambled eggs, crisp
bacon, dilled potatoes, homemade fresh croissants, fresh
squeezed orange juice, and other specialities. The ornate
fireplace graces Highlawn Inn's intimate dining and sitting
area, the tasteful setting for these opulent breakfasts.
Snacks and springwater-based beverages are always available.
Views from the dining room afford peaceful respites.
Fine Dining -
A sumptuous
multi-course dinner is served on fine linens and silver
selected Saturday evenings and holidays, with menus changing
to include local ingredients, herbs from the Inn's gardens,
and complimentary award-winning Fisher Ridge wines. Call for
schedule or see website. |
