The Inland Region is the largest part of the state. It is mostly dry and hot. In fact eastern Washington has little in common with the green, western side of the state. Rolling sagebrush covers many miles and massive red rocks loom over the prairies. Huge bare patches of basalt is left over from centuries of Ice Age floods. Further south, the lower Yakima Valley is a vast agricultural belt with miles of orchards, wineries and farms that flank the Yakima River. With over 300 sunny days a year, this region is the largest producer of apples in the world. In the last 20 years Eastern Washington has also become one of the Northwest's major wine regions. This river valley is great for outdoor activities such as rafting, fishing, hiking, biking and skiing. Spokane is the largest city east of the Cascades and offers lodging bed and breakfast inns and hotels, shops and restaurants.
