| Vermont
has the greatest concentration of covered bridges in the
United States. A total of 114 in this tiny state, many of
which are still in use. The name "Vermont" is
itself derived from the French, les monts verts, "the
green mountains." After playing an important role in
the American Revolution, Vermont resisted the advances of
the neighboring colonies and declared itself an independent
Republic in 1777. Fourteen years later it was the first
state to join the original 13. Besides it long history and
its many covered bridges, Vermont is known for its maple
sugar, excellent ski resorts, lakes river and mountains and
its abundant fall foliage. When this state is not springtime
green, or winter white, it is red, yellow, orange and gold
sprinkled with pristine blue water lakes and streams. It is
the place where
Bed
and Breakfast Inns dot the countryside and lovers come
to honeymoon. It is a place for whimsical celebrations of
past inventors, writers and artists and events. And its is a
recreators paradise from
winter
skiing to summer time water sports,
golf
and tennis. This small state is a big vacation. |
