| Lake
Champlain is considered by some as the 6th great lake. Just
over 490 square miles, it is the sixth largest body of fresh
water in the United State. Approximately 108 miles long, 12
miles across at its widest point, and with a depth of
approximately 399 feet, the lake flows north from Whitehall,
New York and drains into the St. Lawrence River via the
Richelieu River in Quebec. Towns and cities on the shores of
Lake Champlain offer opportunities for swimming, boating,
fishing, scuba diving, and paddling. Vermont's largest city
on Lake Champlain is Burlington. With a thriving waterfront,
an aquarium and many choices for dining, and live
entertainment this is a great place to stay at a
bed
and breakfast inn. Travel a few miles north or south,
and you will find wide open pastures gently rolling to the
lakes edge with cottages, boat rentals and the peace and
quiet of Vermonts natural heritage. Find out why St.
Albans is Vermont's "Maple Capital" and has been
rated as one of "The One Hundred Best Small Towns in
America. St. Albans Main Street bustles with fine
specialty shops and award-winning restaurants providing an
air of classic New England Charm and rural flavor. Find out
how maple syrup is made. Smell the fresh-cut hay or pet a
calf. This and so much more is waiting for you at numerous
Vermont farms. In the summer and fall, visit the Farmers
Market where you will find fresh produce, specialty foods
and fine handcrafted goods provided by local farmers and
artisans of the region. Occupying the northeast corner of
Vermont, the Northeast Kingdom represents nearly one-fifth
Vermont's land mass, and with over 200 lakes and ponds, over
25% of Vermont's bodies of water. A richly forested agrarian
community, the Northeast Kingdom is steeped in New England
history. The Stowe / Smugglers' Notch Region of Vermont is
packed with outdoor recreation opportunities all year long.
Winter ski
resorts and
bed and
breakfast lodges offer hearty breakfast in the morning
and hot chocolate after a day on the slopes. Try a
horse-guided tour through the Valley's pristine fields and
woodlands or take an old fashion carriage ride in the
summertime where you can stop for a picnic lunch. You can
hike to the summit of Mt. Mansfield on the Long Trail. Or
take the Mt. Mansfield Auto Toll Road where from 4,393 feet
you can see Lake Champlain to the west and Mt. Washington,
in New Hampshire, to the east. Take a wild ride down the
Alpine Slide, or go up and down on the Stowe Mountain Resorts
Bungee Trampoline. Meet farm families at one of Vermonts
agri-tourism farms. |
