This recipe is well over 100 years old. It has won several awards at county fairs.

Ingredients

4 cups flour

2 cups sugar

2 eggs

1/2 cup buttermilk

1 cup shortening

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon baking soda

2 teaspoons vanilla extract (or favorite flavoring)

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Sift flour into a large pan. Pat out a well in the middle of the flour. Pour remaining ingredients into well. Knead dough by hand. Add flour to roll, if necessary. Roll out the dough, then cut out cookies. Bake until done.

Makes: Approximately 2 dozen 2-inch cookies
