About:
Artist Penny Truitt
BA/Classical
Archaeology, Boston University, 1962
postgraduate work, Bryn Mawr College, 1962-63;
Harvard University, 1965-67
Starting
with a career in Classical Archaeology, Penny Truitt's
interest in Greek vase painting inspired her to create her own
clay work. Now with her own studio, Penny produces raku pieces
reflecting the bold angles and colors of the environment that
surrounds her. Her latest work is representative of travels in
the Southwest- the clarity of edges, striations of earth and
color, and wind-worn expanses.
Unlike the usual firing cycle, Raku offers an immediate
involvement with each pot. My goal is a search to extend
design and color beyond the expected, to find in each piece an
expression of the intensity which the process demands. Every
[piece] represents a series of crucial and irrevocable
decisions; the result is always unique, and the pleasure is to
be found in its spirit.
