Paris Stories
is the body of work created by Kimberly Klein during a recent
international photography workshop conducted in Paris by
prominent photographer Peter Turnley. The workshop was called
"The Streets of Paris" and the participants were to
come up with their own storyline and then tell that story
through their images. One of the stories that emerged from the
workshop was that of Amedeo Modigliani, a painter who lived in
Paris from 1906-1920. It is a dark, tragic yet very romantic
story told through the composite hand-colored images of the
actual cafes and studios where Modigliani worked and lived.
"For the
last thirty years, I have made quilts for a living... and yet,
I have never liked being referred to as a "quilt maker".
That term seemed to be more focused on the final product,
rather than the process. And for me, it's the process that is
significant... far more significant than the finished piece."
"My "art
form" is that I cut things apart and put them back
together into a more pleasing "whole". I start with
a vague idea of where I'm going, but I'm very open to new
ideas that suggest themselves along the way. Usually, the
finished piece is very different than what I thought it would
be when I started. It's sort of like life. We never really end
up where we thought we would when we were young. But it's the
journey that holds the riches... not the finish line."
" I have
always loved working with textiles. I have also loved
photography. For years, I have collected and photographed flea
market treasures. Integrating all these "pieces of me"
into a new art form is exhilarating...very satisfying. But the
process is the same thing I've been doing for thirty years.
Cutting apart and putting back together."
