About:
Artist Lisa Tribo
Auburn
University 1971-1975
Memphis College of Art 1978-1983
Although Lisa
was a painting major at Memphis College of Art, she has worked
extensively in fabric and textiles, including surface design,
weaving, quilting, sculpture and garment construction. Lisa
worked with the contemporary dance company, Project:Motion for
seven years designing and making costumes and producing
graphics for their advertisement and programs. She now works
primarily on painting and drawing, but is still fascinated
with the world of fabric and textiles.
My work is
more meditation than expression. Whether I have arranged the
fabric to mimic a landscape or figure, or simply clipped an
intriguing segment from a larger photo. the process becomes
one of losing myself in the folds, the pleats, the shadows and
light which are already there and the color, which I invent. I
work very close to the canvas, then step back to see an image
revealed. Amazing!
Why fabric? It
is the element in so many works of art that can reveal or
conceal, that adds color and mood and richness, motion or
serenity. Items of clothing are iconographic. Their detail and
textures, for me, are mysterious and beautiful and soothing.
