What is
an Apple Brown Betty?
Dating back to
the early American Colonial days, a "betty" was a
baked pudding made with layers of sweetened or spiced fruit
and bread crumbs. Some food historians believe that this came
about because of the limited facilities to make pie crusts, so
bread crumbs worked very well for this type of bread pudding
dessert. In fact in those days no one wasted food, so bread
crumbs served very well in desserts, stews and casseroles.
Today it is
usually served with a lemon sauce and/or whipped cream. The
most familiar one is the Apple Brown Betty, made with sliced
apples and brown sugar.
