Bed and Breakfast
Accommodations of Providence... The Edgewood Manor
Edgewood Manor was built in 1905 by Samuel Priest, a wealthy
businessman, as a tribute to his wife and four daughters. He
commissioned the three-story Greek Revival Mansion to be built
as his "summer cottage," not unlike the cottages of
Newport at the turn of the century. Edgewood was the first
major suburb built outside of Providence proper.
The mansion has been meticulously and lovingly restored
with attention to historical detail. The Manor boasts of over
2,000 square feet of common area, fabulously adorned with
wonderful art and tremendous antiques from all over the world.
Each piece was carefully placed to complement the ornate
decor. "It's a visual odyssey for the antique lover,"
states Marilyn Walker. "Not unlike a museum," says
Norman Goldberg, "yet comfortable and relaxing." And
Thomas Underwood says that "the collection of fine art
and antiques is lovely."
There are five working fireplaces throughout the Manor,
three of which are enjoyed by all guests in the common areas.
The mansion also boasts of having an entire floor of Grueby
tiles. Stunning stained and leaded glass throughout the
mansion shows off its stature as well as giving way to special
lighting effects.
Located next door is the Newhall House, circa 1892. This
property was acquired in 1996 and is a fabulous example of the
Queen Anne shingle style. This Victorian House was built for
Mr. Newhall, a real estate developer who plotted Norwood
Avenue. The house has stained glass throughout and is
wonderfully appointed with fine antiques and four-poster beds
in the spacious bedrooms. Children are allowed in this house.
Each guestroom is elegantly appointed and decorated in high
Victorian style with empire overtones. All guestrooms feature
private baths and cable television. Whirlpool tubs in several
of the rooms and fireplaces in two of the rooms provide an
added romance to your stay. Two rooms in the Newhall House
have kitchens for your convenience. |
Breakfast is served daily in the dining room, or you may
choose to enjoy it on the outdoor patio.
Within walking distance from Edgewood Manor are the renowned
Roger Williams Park and Zoo and Narragansett Bay, as well as
antique shops and fine dining in and around Edgewood and
Pawtuxet Village. Some activities that abound in the area
include golf, sight-seeing, shopping, and bird watching.
Edgewood Manor is conveniently located for both the business
and vacation traveler. You are just 2-1/2 miles from historic
downtown Providence, four miles from Rhode Island's Green
State Airport, and 25 minutes from Newport. Only one hour away
each, Boston, Cape Cod, and Foxwood Casino make fun day trips.
