The town of
South Kingstown was established in 1658 and
incorporated as a town in 1723. It is located
approximately 30 miles from Providence and is Rhode
Island's largest town in land area. South Kingstown
borders the Atlantic Ocean and is a summer resort
destination for its beautiful sandy beaches. Many salt
water marches, farmlands and woodlands belong to this
area. Many of the residents refer to the town as "Wakefield".
In fact, Wakefield, Kingston, Peace Dale, West
Kingston, Green Hill, Matunuck, Snug Harbor,
Middlebridge, Perryville, Usequepaugh, Tuckertown, and
Indian Lake are villages located within the Town of
South Kingstown.
Situated on
the Saugatucket River, downtown Wakefield offers a
variety of shops and gourmet restaurants. The new
riverfront walkway attracts those that enjoy scenic
leisurely walks or bike riding that links to the
William C. O'Neill Bike Path and crosses the historic
downtown village. Kingston, one of the fourteen
villages that make up South Kingstown, is home of the
University of Rhode Island with its wonderful 7,700
seat Thomas M. Ryan Center that hosts sporting and
cultural events and concerts. |
