Step into another
time, an era revered for its class, dignity, and beauty, in
the Reynolds Mansion.
This elegant
reminder of the past is of the Late Victorian period featuring
an eclectic blend of Gothic, Italianate, and Queen Anne
styles. When first arriving, notice the red sandstone exterior
that was laid by Italian stone masons. Reportedly 20 workmen
were constantly laying stone! Rich in history and unparalleled
in charm the Reynolds Mansion is appreciated in any decade.
The Reynolds Mansion
was completed in 1885 by Major William Frederick Reynolds, a
wealthy businessman, landowner, and banker. When the bachelor
died in 1893, he left his estate to his nephew, Col. W.
Frederick Reynolds, who also became a prominent entrepreneur
in the area. The Carriage House was built in 1893 and the
semi-circular addition in 1901. Since Col. Reynolds' death in
1941, the house has gone through several owners and at one
time served as a church. Today the house and carriage house
are owned by Joseph & Charlotte Heidt, Penn State Alumni.
This fine
establishment offers six rooms. Each room has a private bath
and fireplace, five rooms feature Jacuzzis, and one room has a
steam shower. One room features a magnificent painted cherub
mural on the ceiling, while another room boasts an ornate
inlaid parquet floor and a sitting area in the turret. No
matter what room is chosen, all guests enjoy the mansions
intricate and detailed interior: a marble vestibule, classic
mirrors, handcrafted woodwork, stained glass windows, detailed
moldings, and inlaid parquet floors, of which no two are the
same. The paneled hall ceiling is made from walnut, and the
staircase is hand-carved and adorned with a brass lamp on the
newel post. Another feature is the calling system, which is
still quite useful.
