The Oar House Bed and Breakfast, an L-shaped Craftsman-style
home just four blocks from Newport's ultra-romantic Nye Beach,
first opened its doors to guests in the early 1900's. The home
originally served as a boarding house, but later converted
into a colorful bordello before finding its current niche as a
more sedate bed and breakfast.
Although the women who once made the Oar House so worldly
have long since disappeared, Persian carpets, Oriental objects
d'art, nautical paraphernalia, and other eclectic collections
still provide the Oar House a well-traveled look full of
mystery and exotic intrigue. The seaside inn's unique
centerpiece, a third-floor enclosed cupola with widow's walk,
offers 360-degree views of the Pacific Ocean, Oregon's
majestic mountains, and some of the most magnificent sunsets
you could ever imagine.
The Oar House Bed and Breakfast accommodates guests with
five individually decorated rooms (four with ocean view), each
with a private bath and queen-sized bed. Two rooms have a
Jacuzzi tub for two. Two side-by-side upstairs accommodations
-- the Chart Room and the Starboard
Cabin -- are perfectly suited for couples traveling
together or for anyone needing a little extra space.
Oar House common areas include a living room with cable
television, a sitting room with a cozy fireplace and
state-of-the-art audio system with 30 channels of piped-in
cable music, and a bar area with refrigerator, snacks, and
hot-water dispenser for freshly brewed teas. An extensive
collection of books and periodicals can be found throughout
the Oar House, and when the weather's warm, there's nothing
better than enjoying one of those books out on the inn's
spacious wind-sheltered deck.
Freshly ground coffee is brewed for the inn's early-morning
risers, and a gracious, Gourmet-inspired breakfast is
served each morning to your private table. |
After breakfast, you can catch up on the news with the two
daily newspapers or check out the Oar House information center
filled with brochures on surrounding attractions and sample
menus provided by local restaurants.
However you choose to spend your day, though, chances are
you won't have to venture far. Most of Newport's wonderful
shops, galleries, restaurants, and performing arts venues are
within walking distance, and the historic Bay Front is only a
half-mile away. Other local attractions include Newport's two
historic lighthouses, an impressively large fishing fleet
moored in Yaquina Bay, and the world-famous Oregon Coast
Aquarium and Hatfield Marine Science Center. |
