Ingredients

9 jumbo eggs

2-1/4 cups milk

1/4 cup plus 1 Tablespoon orange liqueur

1-1/2 Tablespoons vanilla

1-1/2 teaspoons cinnamon

One 1-pound loaf French bread, cut into 16 one-inch slices

10 Tablespoons butter

1-1/2 pounds tart apples (about 3), peeled and coarsely chopped

1-1/2 cups chopped pecans

2/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar

1 cup hot water

Whisk eggs; add milk, orange liqueur, vanilla, and cinnamon. Arrange bread in a single layer in a 9 x 13-inch baking dish. Pour egg mixture over bread and let stand until egg mixture is absorbed, turning once.

Melt 7 Tablespoons butter in skillet over medium heat. Add apples and saute 5 minutes. Reduce heat to medium-low. Add pecans and saute 5 minutes. Add sugar and hot water and cook until mixture thickens (about 3 to 5 minutes), stirring constantly. Remove from heat.

Meanwhile, melt 1 Tablespoon butter in another skillet and saute bread to a golden brown, adding more butter as needed. Transfer to plates and spoon apple mixture over toast.
