Fishing
Originating from a source
deep within the White Mountain National Forest, the Saco River and
its watershed consist of 100 miles of crystal-clear brooks,
streams and rivers. Water types vary from fast tumbling,
boulder-strewn rapids to the long glides and deep pools of the
valley. Fish thrive in this environment, ranging from pan-sized
brook trout and leaping rainbows to brown trout weighing as much
as eight pounds. Conway Lake and other ponds harbor bass,
pickerel, and perch. Depending on weather conditions and the snow
melt, the best fishing conditions usually begin in May and peak in
June. A constant flow of cold mountain water provides for good
angling throughout the summer. The cooling nights of autumn bring
about attractive fall fishing. During the winter months, ice
fishing on valley ponds is a popular daytime activity.*
