| The
Monadnock Region of New Hampshire very New England charming

where white clapboard churches and town halls edge manicured
town greens. Rolling fields with neatly planted rows quilt
the hillsides, and country roads lined by rock walls invite
exploration at a leisurely pace. Louisa May Alcott summered
in Walpole, a handsome village that Emily Dickinson visited
too. Francestown has some wonderful Federal-era homes, as
well as an 1801 meeting house. Peterborough, home of the
MacDowell Colony, one of the country's first formal artists'
retreats, is said to have inspired Thornton Wilder to write
"Our Town." It also has the first tax-supported
Free Library in the world. Temple claims to have the oldest
town band in the country, as the Temple Town Band celebrated
its 200th anniversary in 1999. It even played at a memorial
for George Washington. Lodging accommodations in this New
