Lake Sunapee Region is steeped in Colonial History, historic
inns
and charming bed and breakfasts. Follow the
Connecticut river and you will follow the path many early
settlers took. The mighty Connecticut River, which flows
from northern New Hampshire to the Long Island Sound, forms
the states and this regions western border. It
provided transportation and easy access to southern New
England markets, and rich farmlands were found along its
shores. Here the line of defense was drawn during the French
and Indian Wars at numbered forts, including the Fort at No.
4, now the town of Charlestown. Highlights of a visit to
Bradford Center include the 1838 meeting house with
Gothic-style tower that has decorative wooden spikes of a
design unique to New Hampshire. Hanover is the home of
Dartmouth College, one of the oldest and most venerable
institutions in the country. Set on a ridge with wonderful
views, New London is a charming town that's home to
Colby-Sawyer College, a summer theater and Little Sunapee
Lake. |
