Enjoy a taste of old England in the warmth
and charm of a truly original New England Country Inn at the
Birchwood Inn. Conveniently located in the beautiful state of
New Hampshire, the Birchwood Inn captures all with its
gorgeous seasons and unforgettable grace.
History traces the opening of the Birchwood
Inn c.1775. Although in operation around that time, the
present brick structure was probably built around 1800. The
present barns were added in 1848 and the total Inn has
remained in very much the same form since that time. Two
centuries have watched "The Old Hotel" entertain
many an overnight guest, Henry David Thoreau among them. In
addition to the tavern, dining and guest room operations, the
Inn has housed the Temple post office, a small general store,
the town meeting hall, and most recently, an antique shop. Now
on the National Register of Historic Places, the Birchwood
joins the rest of the Temple Center historic district in
protecting and preserving the colonial beauty of the village.
One of the most notable features of the Inn
is the guest dining room mural, painted by Rufus Porter
(1825-33). A New England itinerant painter, Porter's works can
also be found at Old Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts. The
Birchwood Inn's bed and breakfast lodging accommodations
include three charming rooms each with private bath plus two
beautifully appointed and roomy suites both with seating areas
and private baths.
Serving meals is a special pleasure at the
Birchwood Inn. Foods are cooked to order and carefully
presented by the innkeepers. One can turn back the clock and
dine as Henry David Thoreau once did. Gaze out on an unspoiled
colonial village and know, at least for the moment, that
everything is right with the world.
Join your innkeepers in one of their two
common areas to meet other guests over a game of backgammon,
chess, checkers and cards. You can always sit down to a jigsaw
puzzle or just quietly read a book. |
There are plenty of things to do during any
season at the Birchwood Inn in the Monadnock Region. There are
great hiking trails along Mount Monadnock, Pack Monadnock and
the Wapack Trail. There is also an excellent Summer Theatre, a
classic Monadnock Music Series, horseback riding and hay
rides. Experience New Hampshire's lovely fall foliage in The
Currier & Ives Corner. Don't forget your camera or easel!
They have fall foliage routes, numerous historic houses to
visit and fine antiquing opportunities. The Cathedral of the
Pines is a must to visit.
Winter is a wonderland in Temple. There is
fine family cross-country skiing nearby. The area offers
several other slopes, all within easy driving distance.
