The Freeze House is a Smoky Mountain bed and breakfast inn
in a North Carolina village setting among centuries-old oaks
and mountain scenery. The house was constructed during the
First World War by Jessie Williams Freeze and Jacob Frank
Freeze. This modified bungalow served as a private home in the
winter and as a guest home in the summer months, giving refuge
to those from the warmer cities and towns. Guests enjoyed
evenings in the living room playing bridge, setback, or
pinochle or on the porch watching the fireflies.
During the Second World War, passenger trains stopped
service to the area, and the tourist trade languished. Mr.
Freeze died in 1946, and Mrs. Freeze began taking in borders
until her final illness in 1973. The Freeze House was restored
and modernized in 1994 and 1995 by Patrick and Mary Ellen
Montague, Patrick being the oldest son of the Freezes'
daughter, Margaret. Michael Montague, the great-grandson of
the Freezes, served as the principal builder and contractor.
Today, in this family tradition of hospitality, The Freeze
House offers three spacious rooms with private baths, cable
television, and air conditioning. Hardwood floors, a
comfortable bed, and a cozy sitting area welcome you in each
lodging accommodation. Two guest houses are also available as
vacation rentals for longer stays.
After a full family-style breakfast with fresh coffee and
savory entree, guests of the Freeze House will want to survey
some of the attractions in the area. The Bed and Breakfast is
five miles north of Western Carolina College University and
one mile east of Dillsboro's shops and boutiques and the Great
Smoky Mountain Railroad. |
The Great Smokies National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway
are both within a short drive, allowing for beautiful wildlife
and landscape scenery. The many area activities include
hiking, birding, rafting, canoeing, seasonal hunting and
fishing, and even gem mining. The Cherokee Indian Reservation
and Harrah's Casino are also within a short distance for
trying your luck and perhaps bringing home more than just
memories!
Visit The Freeze House during your next getaway and
experience the many generations of hospitality that have gone
into to this delightful bed and breakfast. |
