The Outer Banks of North
Carolina are a favorite destination for many East Coast and
Mid-western vacationers. Modern highways and high span bridges
bring these travelers to the Dare County beaches and to
historic Roanoke Island and the towns of Manteo and Wanchese.
In the early 1900's, before the highways and bridges, even
before the ferries, travel on the Outer Banks was much more
adventurous....
Roanoke Island is a place
of special importance. It was here that Sir Walter Raleigh
established the first English settlement in the New World. The
fate of "The Lost Colony" remains a mystery, but its
exciting story is told nightly during the summer season near
the site of the original Fort Raleigh. In nearby Manteo, a
replica of the ship that brought the colonists to the island
is docked. No trip to the Outer Banks would be complete
without a tour of Elizabeth II and a night at The Lost Colony.
Roanoke Island is only
minutes away from the beaches of Nags Head and Kitty Hawk.
Equally close is the entrance to Cape Hatteras National
Seashore, the gateway to Oregon Inlet, Pea Island National
Refuge, and Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands. Sunbathing,
beachcombing, and just soaking up some rays are obviously some
of the areas pastimes, but you really must visit The Wright
Brothers Memorial, located in Kill Devils Island. This is
where the Wright Brothers built their plane and launched
mankind into the age of powered flight. There's so much to do
-- fishing, birdwatching, biking, shopping -- and it's all
only a few hours drive from most major East Coast metropolitan
locations. |
