When Brigadier General Ulysses S. Grant said to his men, “There will be no fighting at Pittsburgh Landing; we will have to go to Corinth,” he put this small Mississippi town into the history books forever. It was from Corinth that the armies set out for the battle of Shiloh in the early days of April 1862. Both the Corinth battle site and the local Civil War locations are considered National Historic Landmarks. Oxford's historic district and the University of Mississippi are in this part of the state as well as Bed and Breakfast Inns that offer southern hospitality in stately antebellum plantation homes.
