| The
Southeast Region of Minnesota is prairieland where buffalo
roam as remnants of the vast grassland meadows that once
covered the plains. A fascinating record of prehistoric life
in the area was discovered on a stretch of prairie near
Windom. Now a state historic site, the Jeffers Petroglyphs
include more than 2,000 rock carvings of human figures and
animals, dating from 3,000 B.C. up to the 1700s. Another
prominent site of Indian history is Pipestone National
Monument. Just outside the town of Pipestone, this quarry of
red stone has been used for centuries by many tribes. The
productive farms of the area trace their roots to humble sod
homes and small fields carved out of the prairie. Dozens of
historic sites and museums relay the stories of determined
pioneers from Germany, Scandinavia and central Europe. The
towns they founded are now noted for their historic
architecture, antique shops,

and breakfast inns, and ethnic festivals. In the
countryside there are bike trails, canoe rivers, and
fishing
