Penury Hall, an historic New England property built in 1830 in Southwest Harbor, Maine on Mount Desert Island, has welcomed many through its distinctive red front door since opening as a Bed and Breakfast Inn in 1982. The Penury Hall Bed and Breakfast philosophy, according to hosts Gretchen and Toby Strong, is that you will become an honorary member of their family during your stay, but you don't have to do the dishes!

Three lodging accommodations, each with private bath, are available for your comfort. You may choose the Admiral's Room with a queen bed, the Skipper's Room with a double bed, or the Crew's Room with a king or two twin beds. If you happen to be spending some time indoors, the home's library, music, puzzles, games (your hosts play a mean game of backgammon), and television will entertain you. The refrigerator will store your lunchables, and laundry facilities will keep you neat and tidy.

Breakfast, served from 7:30 until 9:00 a.m. or by previous arrangement, consists of juices, coffee, teas, fresh fruit in season, and various cereals plus a daily entree with bacon or sausage. Main courses include Eggs Benedict, Cinnamon Waffles, Penurious Omelet, Blueberry Pancakes, to name a few. Breakfast is an ideal time to tap your hosts' intimate knowledge of the Island and Downeast Maine.

Located on the quiet side of Mt. Desert Island, Penury Hall is 14 miles from bustling Bar Harbor and less than a half-mile from many of the attractions of Acadia National Park. Swimming, hiking, biking, kayaking, whale watching, and relaxing on a rock by the ocean are a few of the many pleasures that await you. A grand selection of dining places, whether it be gourmet or lobster-on-the-pier, await your discovery. Winter or summer, the on-site sauna is the answer to a strenuous day of activity.
