Enter another
era of understated elegance and privacy at The Bar Harbor
Tides, a Bed and Breakfast by the Sea in Bar Harbor,
Maine. |
Allow the
sweeping ocean views from the privacy of your own suite to
instill a sense of peace and wonder. Sink into the casual
luxury of the overstuffed wicker furniture as the outdoor
wood fireplace and your glass of wine warm you inside and
out. Experience the sense of the gentry of the late 1800's
as you enjoy your full gourmet breakfast served on the
veranda with warm ocean breezes and views of the formal
gardens. Shed the cares of the "real world" and
escape to the Tides, the only in-town bed & breakfast
on the water in Bar Harbor. |

Built in 1887,
the 16-room Greek Revival "cottage" was totally
renovated to accommodate guests in four luxurious
accommodations: one room with queen bed and three suites,
each with sweeping views of Frenchman's Bay and a parlor
with TV. Each accommodation offers thoughtful appointments
and amenities appreciated by today's traveler without
compromising the legacy evoked by The Tides. Newly and
tastefully restored and decorated, all rooms have private
baths, and all suites have fireplaces.
On the National
Register of Historic Places and in the Historic District
of Bar Harbor, The Tides is set on nearly and acre and a
half of landscaped grounds accented by lovely formal
English gardens and towering shade trees. Step through the
spacious reception hall and into gracious living and
dining rooms; each room of wonderful proportions, boasting
working fireplaces and full ocean views. The unique curved
veranda at the back of the house is filled with wicker
furniture surrounding one of the only outdoor fireplaces
on the island. The casual elegance of the public rooms in
the Inn flows on to the second floor, where there is
another formal drawing room (with its own gas fireplace),
perfectly suited for hours of relaxed reading.
Breakfast is
very special at The Tides. In the summer, a full, hot
gourmet breakfast is served on the veranda overlooking
Frenchman's Bay. In cooler weather, a cheery fire and soft
candlelight accompany the morning fare served in the
formal dining room with its own grand view of the bay.
Enjoy a cup of fresh brewed coffee or tea, fresh baked
muffins, your choice of juice, a delicate serving of fruit
and your choice of cold cereal; all as a prelude to a
different hot main dish each morning. Two favorites
include French Acadian Buckwheat Blueberry Pancakes, made
with flour milled by a local Maine family, and Captain
Billy's Breakfast, a layered sausage, egg and cheese
strata baked in the oven and served piping hot. |

If you can tear
yourself away from relaxing on the veranda or at the water's
edge in one of the Adirondack chairs, the Inn is only a short
5-minute walk to the village of Bar Harbor with its many
galleries, shops, and fine restaurants.
Acadia National
park is just minutes from the inn, with over 120 miles of
hiking trails. Climb to the top of Cadillac Mountain (the
tallest on the eastern Seaboard) and be the first in the U.S.
to see the sun rise that day, or bike on more than 50 miles of
roads built at the start of the century by John D. Rockefeller
and dedicated to bikers and walkers around the bay.
Set sail on the sea
in search of whales, or just cruise around the bay chasing the
sunset on a 3-masted schooner. Play golf on the 8th oldest
course in the U.S. Shop in one of more than 50 galleries and
shops. Go antiquing on the quiet side of the island. The list
of leisure time activities is endless. |
