photo of view of Five Gables Inn Bed and Breakfast, East Boothbay, Maine

The Five Gables Inn of East Boothbay, Maine, perched on a garden-framed hillside, remains a seaside summer hotel of yore. For more than a century, its broad verandah has overlooked a quiet cove where lobsterboats tug at their moorings. And guests still linger in welcoming wing chairs in front of a big fireplace in the common room, just as they did in that golden time when elegantly dressed ladies strolled by the sea with white parasols.

If guests from the past were to return today, however, they would certainly be struck by all of the inn's modern luxuries. For at the Five Gables Inn, while the best of yesteryear has been lovingly preserved, it has been complemented by all the pampering necessities that today's discriminating travelers expect to find in three-star lodging.

The New England inn offers 15 guest accommodations, all with private baths and period-reproduction furnishings including queen, king, or four-poster beds. All of the guestrooms afford spectacular views of Linekin Bay, its islands, and the sea beyond. Five of the rooms have working fireplaces. Lodging includes a sumptuous, multi-course breakfast by your Culinary Institute-trained innkeeper, Mike Kennedy. Afternoon refreshments with homemade treats are also available.

There was a time when a dozen or more rambling summer hotels welcomed guests to Maine's famed Boothbays. Today, just one is left. Mike and his wife, De, realizing just how special their landmark is, are dedicated to perpetuating an atmosphere in which today's guests can recapture some of the peace and graciousness of the past.

Visitors to Mid-Coast Maine can choose from a variety of activities, from whale-watching excursions and trips to Monhegan Island to windjammer sailing and scenic boat cruises.

You will love long, lingering walks to lighthouses along the rocky shores, visiting local villages (bustling Boothbay Harbor is just three and a half miles away, and Bath, Wiscasset, and New Harbor are all nearby), and eating plenty of lobster!

Sports enthusiasts enjoy swimming, jogging, biking, kayaking, and golf.

With today's life in the fast lane, the simple pleasures that abound at Five Gables Inn are a very welcoming change of pace.
