Cultural Center (museum) as well as 2 restaurants. Tangier Island (7
miles south) can be reached only by charter or the Tangier ferry
from Crisfield.
- Recommended Local Best Kept Secrets: The village of
Tylerton itself, a waterman village made up almost entirely of
descendants of settlers from Wales and Cornwall as early as the
1660's. Its history, language, socio-political structure (there has
never been a formal local government), religious life, and struggle
for survival against threats of land and demographic erosion have
captivated many guests. Tylerton is the hauntingly beautiful and
remote place which you thought no longer exists. And guests are
almost always warmly welcomed by the locals.
- Directions: Smith Island, straddling the
Maryland/Virginia state line, is 10 miles out in the Chesapeake Bay
and is best reached from the port of Crisfield on the lower Eastern
Shore of Maryland. Tylerton has neither roads nor vehicles, although
travel to (port) Crisfield requires an automobile. Travel to
Crisfield on Route 50 (Washington, D.C. and Baltimore via Annapolis
and Salisbury) or Route 13 (Philadelphia or Norfolk). Ferry departs
Crisfield at 12:30 and 5:00 p.m. daily and Tylerton at 7:00 a.m. and
3:30 p.m. Parking is available in Crisfield. Guests coming in their
own craft can tie up at the County Dock in Tylerton.
