The Inn of Silent Music, surrounded on three sides by water and saltmarsh, is a peaceful haven on Smith Island, located off Maryland's Eastern Shore in the Chesapeake Bay.

The sparsely populated, idyllic waterman village of Tylerton remains a place many are surprised still exists. Here among this setting of abundant wildlife and amazing sunrises and sunsets, you will find a place away from the noise and pollution of city life. This is the community celebrated by Tom Horton in An Island Out of Time.

The main portion of what is now the bed and breakfast was built in the "Maryland House" style circa 1916 as a private home. An additional wing was floated in and attached to the house in the 1930's. Three guest accommodations are available, each featuring a private bath, queen-sized bed, air conditioning, refrigerator, and a magnificent view of the sunrise or sunset over the water. The furnishings, a fresh mix of antiques and flea market finds, will make you feel at home. You'll find numerous book corners as well as comfortable wicker chairs in your room, in the parlor, or on the veranda.

In the morning, surround yourself with the sights and sounds of nature amid the potted flower garden in the spacious screened veranda scarcely ten meters from the water. A cozy country kitchen serves during inclement weather. Enjoy a gourmet breakfast, perhaps including puffed German pancakes and vibrant conversation. You can take lunch, featuring acclaimed crab cake sandwiches, at the local Drum Point Market, Tylerton's single store and hang-out. The island's only sit-down restaurant, the Inn offers a seafood dinner at an additional charge but with a complimentary sunset view.

After you have indulged over breakfast, partake in all the activities this charming area has to offer. Borrow one of the Inn's two canoes, two-person kayak, or bicycles for some exploring, serious birdwatching, or just marvelling. Sneak a peak at a waterman's life along Silent Music's shores, or find you own place to escape.
