Springfield boasts two spectacular family favorites - Six
Flags New England delivers thrills and chills; the
Basketball Hall of Fame celebrates the glory of the game
that was invented here. The Pioneer Valley's "knowledge
corridor" actually stretches all along the Connecticut
River Valley and into the hills on either side from north of
Springfield to just south of the Vermont border. The
corridor flanks the Connecticut River as far east as the
quaint little communities of Leverett, Belchertown, and New
Salem and extends out west to places like Florence,
Haydenville, and Shelburne Falls. The region also has a
rich array of art, science, and history museums. Take the
kids
to see larger-than-life bronze sculptures of the Grinch,
Yertle the Turtle, and Horton the Elephant at the Dr. Seuss
National Memorial Sculpture Garden in Springfield. Enjoy the
bustling town of Northampton, a center of the region's
thriving crafts scene,
bed
and breakfast inns and home of Smith College. The
charming college town of Amherst, home to the University of
Massachusetts and two of the region's nine private colleges.
