Galena, tucked away in the northwest corner
of Illinois, was a thriving center for mining, steam boating,
and commerce in the mid-1800's. By 1850, Galena was the
busiest Mississippi River port between St. Louis and St. Paul.
|
The town declined by the time of the Civil
War, but this was a blessing in disguise, as economic
stagnation prevented Galena's magnificent architecture from
being razed or modernized, and the grand old buildings stood
unchanged for decades.
Architecture buffs still throng to this
area to glimpse a rare example of unspoiled nineteenth-century
buildings in Federal, Italiante, Greek Revival, Queen Anne,
Gothic Revival, Second Empire, Romanesque, and Galena
Vernacular. Many travelers refer to Galena as the "New
England of the Midwest" and return time and again to
experience the unforgettable scene scape. In addition to all
of the history, be sure to enjoy the many shops, fine dining,
dancing, snow skiing, riverboat cruises, championship golf,
riverboat gambling, and much more that the Galena, Illinois
area offers.
Whether you're visiting Galena for a brief
getaway or a longer vacation, The Goldmoor staff is here to
serve your every need. Solitude, fresh air, and magnificent
scenery await you when visiting "Galena's Premier Country
Inn." |
