The
Central Region of Illinois is the land of Lincoln and home
of the state capital, Springfield. From the awe-inspiring
Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum to the
former president's frontier home to his monumental family
tomb, the Springfield area is a treasure trove of Lincoln
lore. Shea's Gas Station Museum, a popular stop along
historic Route 66. is a great diversion into 50's history.
Tour the lovely Executive Mansion, which showcases priceless
antiques and works of art. Sixteen elegant rooms are open to
the public, and include treasures such as the Lincoln
bedroom and the state dining room. Head out to Lincoln's New
Salem, near Petersburg. Interpreters dressed in frontier
garb portray pioneers in this re-created 1800s village where
a young Lincoln once settled. Stay at a
Bed
and Breakfast and pick up some local lore.
