Northern Idaho has the greatest concentration of lakes in the west and evergreen forests abound. The Salmon River bisects the rugged Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness and provides some of the best fishing, whitewater kayaking and rafting in the world. Spectacular mountain and river scenery is common place but not taken for granted. Snowmobilers can enjoy 250 miles of groomed trails in the St. Joe National Forest, rolling ridges, and open hillsides for any skill level. In May of 2001, the Taft tunnel section of the Hiawatha trail was complete and the bike trail was opened to ride. Dubbed as one of the most breathtaking scenic stretches of the rail road, the 15 mile stretch of the bike trail passes through 10 tunnels, 7 high trestles, and is known for the 1.6 mile Taft tunnel which burrows under the Idaho/Montana state line.
