West Maui and the
island's rugged North shore speak of unimaginable beauty and
much to see and do. Lahaina, an old whaling town, is now
shopping mecca bustling with travelers from all over the
world.
Lahaina is very
immersed in the culture of old Hawaii, so allow yourself some
time to explore the island's historic sites including the
Baldwin Home, the whaling ship Carthaginian, the famous Banyan
Tree and the Lanakila Church. Located on the Northern edge of
the city in the Lahaina Jodo Mission, the home to the largest
Buddha statue outside of Japan. There is also a beautiful
temple and 90-foot-tall pagoda. |
In Lahaina, the locus
of activity is along Front Street, which dates back to the
1820s. It is lined with stores and restaurants, and is often
packed with tourists. Banyan Tree Square features an
exceptionally large banyan tree planted in 1873 to commemorate
the fiftieth anniversary of the arrival of the missionaries.
It is also the site of the reconstructed ruins of Lahaina
Fort, originally built in 1832.
Area attractions
include Ka'anapali Beach, Banyan Tree Park, Sugar Cane Train,
Lahaina Heritage Museum, and Old Lahaina Luau. |
