Kalapana is on the Puna
Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. The small town was once a
treasured Hawaiian fishing village. It was also the site of one of
the largest and nicest black sand beaches. But in 1990, Madame
Pele changed the landscape of Hawaii dramatically. From April
through December of that year, lava flowed relentlessly, burying
the town under 30 feet of molten rock. The lava flow also created
a new coastline. Kalapana is now considered a ghost town. Visitors
can hike across the barren lava fields and view current lava
outbreaks which are easily seen after dark.
