Honaunau is a small
village located on the sunny, southwestern coast of The Big
Island, and just south of the town of Captain Cook. With its
proximity to Honaunau Bay and Puuhonua Bay, Honaunau offers some
of the best snorkeling and diving on the island.
Area activities include
picnicking, hiking, swimming, fishing, snorkeling, diving, and
kayaking.
One of the most
accessible, interesting, and enchanting cultural sites in the
State of Hawaii is the Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical
Park. Translated, the "place of refuge at Honaunau" is
the most complete restoration of an ancient Hawaiian religious
sanctuary in Hawaii.
Other area attractions
include ancient Hawaiian ruins, Saint Benedicts Painted Church,
and Kealakekua Bay.
