Cumberland Island
National, the nation's largest wilderness island, is approximately
18 miles long and 3 miles wide. A smooth sandy beach, sometimes
nearly a mile wide, stretches the entire length of the eastern
shore and has been rated one of America's Top Ten Beaches by USA
Today.
Long before it became a
national seashore and wilderness area, Cumberland Island had a
reputation as a magical place home to sea turtles, wild turkeys,
wild horses, armadillos, and abundant shore birds (over 300
species appear during the course of a year). Its wildlife, dune
fields, maritime forests, salt marshes, and historic structures
make this a visitors shoreline paradise. |
