England is part
of Great Britain (England, Wales, Scotland) and Northern
Ireland. England, in the southeast part of the British
Isles, is separated from Scotland on the north by the
granite Cheviot Hills; from them the Pennine chain of
uplands extends south through the center of England,
reaching its highest point in the Lake District in the
northwest. To the west along the border of Wales, a land of
steep hills and valleys, are the Cambrian Mountains. The
Cotswolds, a range of hills in Gloucestershire, extend into
the surrounding shires. England has miles of shoreline on
cold water with charming seaports and villages.
Scotland's official language is English, however Gaelic
(a melodious language) is spoken in the North and West.
Another language which is close to English is Scots. Whereas
Gaelic is the language of the Highlands & Islands, Scots
is the language of the Lowlands. Scotland is divided into
three main regions; the Highlands, the Midland Valley and
the Southern Uplands. The cities of Edinburgh, Glasgow and
Dundee together with numerous towns, most of the population
and the majority of Scotland's industry is located within
the Midland Valley. Scotland includes 787 islands, of which
most belong to groups known as the Hebrides, Orkney and
Shetland. Only 62 island are larger than three square miles
in area. |
