good life! |
| In
the 1540s, the first gold-seekers arrived in the area now
known as South East Colorado. Francisco Vasquez de Coronado
and his band of conquistadores came to lay claim to the
minerals found at this early date. In 1806, Southeast
Colorado received its first emissaries from the United
States, an expedition led by Zebulon Pike. And in 1833, the
first American settlement was raised called Bent's Old Fort,
a massive adobe that later became a trading and trapping
center, supply depot and rest stop for travelers. This quiet
corner of the state offers miles of prairie land in a vast
landscape that produces fresh air and big skies. The Santa
Fe Trail that ran right along side the Arkansas River
brought traders and later armies into one of the country's
last Native American strongholds. You can pass historic
towns, recreational areas and natural wonders like the
Spanish Peaks as you travel through San Isabel National
Forest. Bed
and Breakfasts,
Ranches
and vacation
rental cabins offer a western flair and abiding
respect for the region's history. |
