Nestled high in the heart
of the San Juan Mountains in a mountain valley, the Town of
Silverton combines supreme natural beauty and magnificent
Victorian charm.
Downtown Silverton is the
infamous Blair Street Bordello District full of singular gift
shops and galleries stuffed with the works of many local artists.
Nearby is the Kendall Mountain Ski Area and Purgatory Ski Resort
is south of town on the way to Durango. |
The main attractions in
Silverton are the rustic dirt streets and Victorian character,
colorful mining history, and its remote location in the heart of
the San Juan mountains -- with just enough services to make life
comfortable. Unlike most other mining camps, Silverton was never
devastated by a major fire, and much of the Victorian architecture
seen today is original.
Silverton can be reached
via the San Juan Skyway most of the year (except when the passes
are buried in fresh fallen snow). But for the most part, town is
an excellent jumping off point for adventures in the heart of the
San Juan Mountains. The ghost towns of Eureka, Animas Forks and
Howardsville are close by. |
