The town is surrounded by the San Juan Mountains and the Uncompaghre National Forest. The San Juan Skyway winds through town following a north-south canyon. Also near Ouray is Box Canyon Falls, one of the premier ice climbing spots in America.

Powder snow, deep and untouched, and ripe for cross-country adventures on skis, snowshoes or snowmobiles is typical of winter in the San Juans. The Ouray Ice Park, the world's first and only ice climbing park, displays dramatic, frozen waterfalls dotted with climbers dressed in their bright colored gear.
