The Durango area offers
western, archeological, historic and Native American vacation
experiences.
The town is surrounded by
mountains and has the Animas River flowing through it, so there
are many outdoor activities to be enjoyed in the area, even within
the city limits. Hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing and
rafting are extremely popular, and hard-core enthusiasts partake
all year. In the winter, Durango has easy access to five major ski
areas.
One of the big
recreational attractions in the area is Vallecito Lake. The lake
offers all the opportunities of an Alpine resort in all seasons.
You can enjoy record-breaking fishing, boating, spectacular hiking
trails and horseback riding in summer. Colorful scenery and
renowned big game hunting arrive with fall. The Durango &
Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are also popular tourist
attractions located in Durango.
Mesa Verde National Park
located west of Durango, is known for its outstanding examples of
Anasazi cliff dwellings and artifacts. This spiritual place offers
beautiful natural and man-made rock formations and the western
light of a setting sun on the cliffs dwellings is awesome. |
