| The
Johnston House |
| The
Johnston House is a California house. Just as the Yankee was
dominant in California after 1849, the architecture of this
house is dominantly Yankee. But the materials, the plan, and the
functions are all modified by the complexities of new sets of
conditions. In its blending of cultural sources within a basic
Anglo-American design, James Johnston's "White House"
is an early and rare example of indigenous California
architecture soon after the Gold Rush, architecture that relates
Anglo-American California to cultural roots. |
| Outwardly,
the building is a classic Eastern salt-box typical in the East,
but virtually one-of-a-kind in California. Its hand-hewn timbers
and pegs of native redwood are superb examples of craftsmanship.
Its setting is a scenic vista of sloping fields and ocean shore.
|
| More
than these elements, however, the house is a blend of disparate
cultures brought together by the western migrations. James
Johnston was an American from Ohio, and his wife's family was
among the earliest of the Californians. Together, Mr. and Mrs.
Johnston created and hosted a cosmopolitan refuge that was
sought by many visitors. The history of the Johnston family and
the house is a history of the period. |
