Glendeven Inn, a charming New England-style Federalist
farmhouse turned bed and breakfast, has been described by USA
Today as one of the country's "10 great places for a
romantic weekend" and by Country Inns magazine as
"one of the 10 best inns in America."
Elegant in its simplicity, the Inn sits in a peaceful
headland meadow just off northern California's Pacific Coast
near the charming village of Mendocino. Three buildings; a
farmhouse, carriage house, and a gabled, barn-sided addition
located in the property's gorgeous gardens actually comprise
the bed and breakfast.
Accommodations There
are 10 rooms and suites at Glendeven Inn. Each lodging
accommodation has a private bath, featherbed, CD player,
hairdryer, and robe, and most come with fireplaces, ocean
views, and porches or balconies.
The Farmhouse has
three suites with fireplaces, ocean views, and outdoor porches
or balconies, as well as two cozy rooms, one with dormer
windows overlooking the ocean, the other with a view of a
private garden.
The Stevenscroft
building houses four spacious luxury rooms with fireplaces and
ocean views. Each room is distinctly furnished with
contemporary art, comfortable furniture, antiques, custom
woodwork, and tile bathrooms. Three of the four rooms have
either a balcony or porch.
The Carriage House
suite offers "luxurious seclusion." The large living
room features a fireplace, TV, VCR, DVD player, refrigerator,
and microwave. The private balcony overlooks the Inn's gardens
and old water tower. The bedroom has a magnificent woven brass
king-sized sleigh bed and stove/fireplace, while the
beautifully tiled bathroom boasts a skylight and shower for
two.
Isaiah Stevens built the main house for his wife, Rebecca,
in 1867, and up until the 1930's, the home remained in the
Stevens family. The A-framed "Stevenscroft" building
in was added 1984, and the current owners, Higgins and Sharon
Williams, renovated the nearby carriage house in 1999 to
include a luxury suite. Sharon and Higgins also opened a
two-bedroom, two-bath vacation rental home,
The Barn
Loft, which resides just down the road from Glendeven.

With Glendeven Inn's emphasis on romance, your privacy is
considered a priority, and to that commitment, breakfast is
delivered to your room in the morning, or you can enjoy your
meal in the sunroom overlooking the ocean. The sumptuous
morning meal includes an interesting fruit dish, a hot egg
dish, warm muffins or coffee cakes, fresh squeezed juice, and
locally roasted coffee and teas. And if you are one
who likes to mingle, your hosts, Sharon and Higgins, serve
wine and hors d'oeuvres every evening.
After breakfast, a leisurely stroll across the meadow will
take you to an inviting Pacific surf and the seaside bay of
Little River, where you can go canoeing or kayaking. Van Damme
State Park also is within walking distance. It offers hundreds
of acres of pristine coastal headlands and a myriad of
isolated trails ideal for hikers, bikers, and horseback riders
alike. And if you're into golf or tennis, there is a top-notch
course and several courts in the area.
Independent of its reputation as one of America's premier
inns, Glendeven Inn regularly attracts visitors to its
pARTners' Gallery. This unique art gallery features the
contemporary ceramics, paintings, etchings, jewelry, and
photography of several local artists. |
