Founded in 1885, this
lumbering town took its name from the 1855 U.S. Army post
established here on what was once an Indian village. Bragg was a
Mexican War hero. |
The
town itself is primarily made up of turn of the century storefronts
and a lot of energy is being invested by local citizens in
maintaining them in a way that is consistent with their historic
roots. Long overshadowed by Mendocino village just to the south,
today Fort Bragg is becoming a popular leisure travel destination in
its own right. There there is an increasing variety of food and
drink emporiums, art galleries, small boutiques, and specialty
stores. Native plant enthusiasts delight in the excellent nurseries
located in the immediate area. A branch campus of the College of the
Redwoods has been established just south of town and there are
several live entertainment venues in town. |
