- Recommended Local Best Kept Secrets: Crissy Field,
a former Army air field, is a newly recreated tidal marsh. It is
great for coastal bird watching, wetlands ecology, and native
plants. The Presidio of San Francisco, one of our
newest national parks, was one of the most important military posts
on the West Coast. Fort Point, a brick and granite
fortress built between 1853 and 1861, is tucked under the Golden
Gate Bridge. Just blocks away, with a view of the Golden Gate
Bridge, is the Palace of the Legion of Honor, an art
museum.
- Directions: From San Francisco Airport:
take 280 North (becoming CA-1) toward 19th Avenue/Golden Gate
Bridge; merge onto Junipero Serra Blvd. Take a slight left onto 19th
Avenue/CA 1. After about 2-1/2 miles, you will go through two large
pillars into Golden Gate Park. Stay in the far left lane to 25th
Avenue, then turn left onto Balboa St. and continue west to 42nd
Avenue. Turn right for 3/4 block.
From the Golden Gate Bridge: take the 19th
Avenue exit to California Street, turn right, and continue on to
42nd Avenue; turn left for 1 block.
From the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge: take
the 9th Street exit to Hayes Street (you will cross Market Street).
Continue on Hayes Street to Stanyan Street, turn right, and continue
on to Fulton. Turn left on Fulton, then turn right onto 42nd Avenue.
