Located on Route 66,
Williams is a unique mountain community filled with history and
nostalgia. Founded in the late 1800's by ranchers, railroaders,
and lumbermen, Williams' name comes from the famous trapper and "mountain
man", Bill Williams. Remnants of those early days are still
visible in the buildings, streets, and neighborhoods of modern-day
Williams.
Once a bawdy frontier
town, the historic district now offers glimpses into Williams'
colorful past. Saloons, bordellos, and shops have been brought
back to life through the care and concern of present-day Williams
merchants. Visitors can stroll the brick sidewalks, and enjoying
the ambience of times gone by. Visitors are sometimes surprised by
"cowboy gunfighters" - a mainstay of Williams summertime
entertainment!
Located within this same
historic area is the historic Grand Canyon Railway & Resort
and Williams Depot. The whistle sounds each day to announce the
train's departure from Williams to the Grand Canyon. Call
1-800-THE-TRAIN to find out more. |
