Hereford is in Cochise
County, in the Sierra Vista-Douglas metro area in Southern
Arizona's San Pedro River Valley. The community was named after
B.J. Hereford, friend of the town founder. Birding and bird
watching is very popular in this area with a collection of
Hummingbird species that attract thousand of enthusiasts. Historic
sites and museums in Hereford include the Arizona Folklore
Preserve and the Coronado National Memorial.
This Coronado National
Memorial commemorates the first European Exploration of the
Southwest. Located on the U.S.-Mexico border, there is an
informative visitor center highlighting the Spanish exploration in
the 1500's and exhibits of the flora and fauna of the region. A
scenic road to Montezuma Pass offers a breathtaking view into Old
Mexico to the south, the San Pedro Valley to the east, and the San
Rafael Valley to the west. Along the memorial's trails, there are
wonderful varieties of plants, animals, and birds. A well
maintained picnic area is available to visitors.
A must see is the
Chiricahua National Monument which was once the home of Cochise
and Geronimo. It is a fantasyland of extraordinary rock sculptures
carved by nature over the centuries. Many plants, animals, and
birds are at home in the cool, moist forest of the majestic
Chiricahua Mountains. |
