Ingredients: 1 teaspoon sugar syrup; 2 dashes Angostura bitters; 3 ounces rye or bourbon; Dash of orange curacao (optional); Chilled soda water (optional); Lemon twist; Orange twist; Maraschino cherry (optional)

Pour the sugar syrup and bitters into an Old-Fashioned glass. Muddle them together with a bar spoon, add 1 ounce of the whiskey, and stir again. Add 2 or 3 large cracked ice cubes and stir again. Pour the remaining 2 ounces of whiskey into the glass. Stir even more. If desired, add dash of orange curacao and/or top up with soda. Garnish with lemon and orange slices and perhaps a cherry.

Measurements
1 dash = 6 drops
3 Teaspoons = 1/2 ounce
1 pony = 1 ounce
1 jigger = 1-1/2 ounce
1 large jigger = 2 ounces

Sugar Syrup
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
Place sugar and water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer gently until the mixture condenses into a clear, sweet syrup, approximately 5 minutes. Cool. You can use immediately or store indefinitely in a sealed container in the refrigerator.
